The time was when neighbor helped neighbor. And the time wasn't that long ago.

In our Grandparents' and great-Grandparents' time, it was a given that if a neighbor needed help you just pitched in and helped out. No questions asked. Even those of us regarded as baby-boomers recall our parents being able to rely on the people on our block to help out in a pinch - whether it was a last minute babysitter or to help out with a remodeling project.

The ladies used to get together and have coffee klatches and card clubs. The men played ball with the boys, were scout leaders, and built things together. Neighborhoods were important and close-knit.

In that spirit, we are trying to keep our elders in their homes for as long as possible. And you are an important part of that. We can help out our neighborhood elders who are in need of having someone be a friendly visitor, helping with light housework, changing a light bulb, tightening down railings, shoveling snow, mowing grass, raking leaves, helping sort through mail, making meals for them at their house, taking them shopping or to hair appointments, playing cards or board games with them, or even doing crafts or artwork with them.

When we were children, whether we knew it or not, our neighborhood elders kept a watch out their windows on us. As adults, now it is our turn to return the favor, and keep a watch out on them. We should start rebuilding our neighborhoods. You are welcome to bring your children with you to teach them about civic duty without them even knowing they are getting a lesson! After all, don't we want our children to have the same advantages we had? Unfortunately, oftentimes families are broken up now due to job transfers or retirement. You can give your child a grandparent and teach them responsibility towards for others all at the same time!
