History & Mission

Founded in 2001 by a group of volunteers andcommunity leaders, Hamline Midway Elders is one of 31 block nurse programs in Minnesota.  As a neighborhood based organization, we provide services which help seniors live in their own homes for as long as possible, delaying or avoiding completely, the need for expensive, taxpayer subsidized nursing home placement.

Primary Goals

  • Assist seniors with at least one activity of daily living.  We arrange transportation, meal & grocery delivery, shopping, seasonal chore assistance, telephone reassurance, friendly visits, volunteer respite, caregiver support referrals for counseling and caregiver support, minor home repairs & modifications, or arrange appropriate nursing and home health aide care. According to our data base, the number of seniors we served each year continues to hover around 185 with 60-70 new persons served added each year.
  • Recruit, train and manage neighborhood residents to be volunteers so they are able to assist with the above listed activities, as well as support for our educational and social events.   From January to December 2007, we enlisted the help of 125 volunteers, 28 of whom were new to the organization.
